A bird with no neocortex passed the test humans use to check for self-awareness

Researchers stuck small colored stickers on magpies' throats, where they could only be seen in a mirror. Birds that could see the mark in a mirror scratched at their own throat; birds without a mirror, or with a colorless sticker, didn't bother. It made the magpie the first non-mammal shown to recognize itself in a mirror, in a brain structured completely differently from the primate brains the test was designed around.
