Some bacteria grow their own internal compass needles

Magnetotactic bacteria build chains of magnetite or iron-sulfide crystals called magnetosomes inside their own cells, wrapped in membrane like a string of beads. The chain acts as a tiny compass, aligning the whole cell with Earth's magnetic field so it can swim straight toward the low-oxygen layers it needs. The behaviour, magnetotaxis, was first described in 1975.
