One patch of sky in Venezuela lights up with lightning almost every night

Where the Catatumbo River flows into Lake Maracaibo, thunderstorms fire lightning on most nights of the year, sometimes flashing dozens of times a minute for hours without a break. For centuries sailors used the distant glow, visible far out at sea, to navigate in the dark — it earned the nickname 'the Maracaibo Beacon'. It's considered Earth's most concentrated source of lightning.
