The first trip around the world killed the man who started it
Ferdinand Magellan set out in 1519 with five ships to find a western route to Asia, but was killed in the Philippines in 1521 before completing the voyage. Juan Sebastián Elcano took command of the sole surviving ship and sailed it back to Spain in 1522 with just 18 of the original 270 crew — the first confirmed circumnavigation of the globe.
