After years of failed digs, an archaeologist found the one tomb the looters missed
Howard Carter had searched Egypt's Valley of the Kings for years, funded by Lord Carnarvon, before his crew finally uncovered a hidden staircase in November 1922. Peering through a small hole into the sealed chamber beyond, and asked if he could see anything, Carter famously replied, 'Yes, wonderful things.' It was the tomb of the boy pharaoh Tutankhamun, found almost completely intact after more than 3,000 years.
