Whether you blame luck or yourself has a name: locus of control

Julian Rotter proposed that people sit somewhere on a spectrum between an 'internal' locus of control, believing they steer their own outcomes, and an 'external' one, crediting fate, luck, or other people. It became one of the most widely used personality measures in psychology, linked to everything from grades to health habits.
