NASA deliberately crashed a rocket into the Moon and found water ice in the debris

In 2009, NASA's LCROSS mission sent a spent rocket stage slamming into a permanently shadowed crater near the Moon's south pole, then flew a probe straight through the resulting debris plume to analyze it before crashing itself a few minutes later. The plume contained water ice, confirming decades of suspicion that the Moon's polar craters hide frozen water.
