The 1883 Krakatoa eruption produced the loudest sound ever recorded

On 27 August 1883, Krakatoa's eruption in the Indonesian archipelago was heard roughly 3,000 miles away on the island of Rodrigues near Mauritius, and its pressure wave circled the Earth for days, registering repeatedly on barometers worldwide. Tsunamis up to 37 metres tall killed more than 36,000 people along the coasts of Java and Sumatra.
