Amundsen reached the South Pole five weeks before Scott — Scott's team never made it back

Roald Amundsen's Norwegian team reached the South Pole on 14 December 1911, using dogsleds and fur clothing adapted for polar travel. Robert Falcon Scott's British party arrived 34 days later, on 17 January 1912, after man-hauling their own sledges in wool clothing — all five men died on the return journey, with Scott and two others perishing just 11 miles from a supply depot.
