In 1999, Daniel Simons and Christopher Chabris had people count passes in a basketball video while a person in a gorilla suit walked through the middle of the court, stopped, and thumped its chest. About 46% of viewers never saw it. Focused attention on one task can blind you to the obvious right in front of you.
