The ship that dredged the deep sea and named its deepest trench
In 1872, HMS Challenger set sail on a four-year, 70,000-mile voyage built purely for science, sounding depths and dredging life from every ocean but the Arctic. Its crew catalogued over 4,000 new species and, in 1875, recorded the deepest sounding of the trip — later named the Challenger Deep in its honor.
