The Australian military lost a war against emus
In 1932, Australian soldiers were sent to Western Australia with machine guns to cull emus that were destroying wheat crops. The birds scattered too fast and in groups too small for machine-gun fire to be effective, and after a few weeks the operation was quietly withdrawn, having killed only a small fraction of the emu population.
