A programmer built software that writes software, then found a literal bug
In 1952, mathematician and naval officer Grace Hopper built the A-0 System, a program that translated symbolic code into machine instructions — one of the first compilers, and the idea that a computer could write its own low-level code was widely doubted at the time. Five years earlier, her team had traced a Harvard Mark II malfunction to an actual moth trapped in a relay, taped it into the logbook, and helped cement 'debugging' as the word for the fix.
