Psychologist John Gottman spent decades videotaping couples argue, then tracked who divorced. Four behaviors kept showing up in couples who split: criticism, contempt, defensiveness and stonewalling. Of the four, Gottman found contempt — sneering, mocking, treating a partner as beneath you — was the single strongest predictor.
