Need for cognition is a stable personality trait describing how much someone genuinely enjoys effortful, complex thinking rather than avoiding it. People who score high on the scale seek out puzzles and arguments for their own sake, and consistently score differently on persuasion, memory and political-reasoning tasks than people who score low.
