A crusade meant for Jerusalem ended up sacking the greatest Christian city alive

The Fourth Crusade set out in 1202 to reclaim Jerusalem but ran out of money paying Venice for ships, got diverted into a Byzantine succession dispute, and in April 1204 ended up storming and sacking Constantinople, the largest and richest Christian city in Europe. The Byzantine Empire never fully recovered; historians treat 1204 as the moment that doomed it.
