The Australian military lost a war against emus in 1932
Western Australian farmers, plagued by tens of thousands of crop-raiding emus, got the army to send soldiers with machine guns. The birds scattered too fast and in small groups, the guns kept jamming, and after weeks the operation was called off having barely dented the population. It's remembered as the 'Emu War' — and the emus won.
