Rome's imperial throne was once sold to the highest bidder
After murdering the emperor Pertinax in 193 AD, the Praetorian Guard put the entire Roman Empire up for auction. Didius Julianus won by promising each guard 25,000 sesterces — about five years' pay. He lasted just 66 days before being deposed and killed.
