A shepherd chasing a lost goat found 2,000-year-old biblical manuscripts in a cave
In late 1946 or early 1947, a Bedouin shepherd named Muhammed edh-Dhib threw a rock into a cave near the Dead Sea while searching for a stray goat and heard something shatter — ancient clay jars holding scrolls over 2,000 years old. Over the next decade, archaeologists found ten more caves near Qumran holding fragments of some 900 manuscripts, including the oldest known copies of Hebrew Bible texts by roughly a thousand years.
