A British submarine sank an Argentine cruiser outside the declared exclusion zone
In May 1982, the British submarine HMS Conqueror torpedoed the Argentine cruiser ARA General Belgrano during the Falklands War, killing 323 sailors — over half of Argentina's total losses in the conflict. The ship was outside Britain's declared 200-mile exclusion zone when hit, making the sinking one of the war's most disputed episodes. It remains the only wartime sinking of a surface ship by a nuclear-powered submarine.
