The universe isn't just expanding — it's speeding up

In 1998, two teams of astronomers measured distant exploding stars called Type Ia supernovae, expecting the universe's expansion to be slowing under gravity. Instead the supernovae were fainter, and farther away, than expected, revealing the expansion is accelerating. The mysterious force behind it was named dark energy, and the discovery won the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics.
