Thirteen days in October 1962 brought the world closest to nuclear war

When US reconnaissance found Soviet nuclear missiles being installed in Cuba, President Kennedy imposed a naval blockade rather than an immediate air strike. Secret backchannel talks ended with the Soviets withdrawing the missiles for a public US pledge not to invade Cuba, plus a hidden agreement to remove US missiles from Turkey.
