The runner who died delivering victory news probably never existed
The story of a Greek herald sprinting from Marathon to Athens to announce victory over the Persians, then dropping dead, appears nowhere in Herodotus's near-contemporary account of the battle. The tale seems to have been embellished centuries later by writers like Plutarch and Lucian, yet it directly inspired the modern Olympic marathon race.
