A single 1896 speech nearly put silver, not just gold, behind every US dollar
William Jennings Bryan told the 1896 Democratic convention that pegging the dollar only to gold starved the economy of money and crushed indebted farmers. His "cross of gold" line won him the nomination on the spot, but he lost the election and gold stayed the sole US standard until 1900.
