The first woman ever paid to do science discovered eight comets

In 1787, King George III granted astronomer Caroline Herschel an annual salary, making her the first woman in Britain paid for scientific work. Over the following decade she discovered eight comets and catalogued thousands of nebulae and star clusters. In 1828 she became the first woman awarded the Royal Astronomical Society's Gold Medal.
