Two physiologists discovered the body's first known hormone in 1902 and coined the word
William Bayliss and Ernest Starling found that a chemical released by the gut into the bloodstream, not a nerve signal, triggered the pancreas to release digestive juices. They named it secretin, and coined 'hormone' for this whole class of chemical messengers. It launched the field of endocrinology.
