No voting system can turn individual preferences into a fair group choice

Kenneth Arrow proved that no ranked-voting rule can simultaneously satisfy a short list of reasonable fairness conditions once there are three or more options. Every electoral or committee system is a tradeoff, not a solution — the theorem launched modern social choice theory and later helped win Arrow a Nobel Prize.
