A tree thought to have died out with the dinosaurs was found alive in a hidden canyon

In 1994, a park ranger exploring a remote gorge in Australia's Wollemi National Park found a stand of trees he couldn't identify. They turned out to be Wollemi pines, a species previously known only from fossils up to 90 million years old and presumed long extinct. Fewer than 100 adult trees survive in the wild, and their exact location is kept secret to protect them from disease and visitors.
