A microbiologist found a whole third branch of life hiding in cow stomachs and hot springs
In 1977, Carl Woese compared the genetic machinery of various microbes and found some that looked bacterial but were, at the molecular level, startlingly different from anything else on Earth. He named them Archaea and split the tree of life into three domains instead of two, overturning a classification scheme biologists had used for a century.
