Light and matter refuse to be just a wave or just a particle

Fire light at two narrow slits and it builds up an interference pattern, like overlapping ripples on a pond — clear wave behavior. Fire it one photon at a time and each one lands as a single dot, like a particle. Electrons do the same trick. Quantum mechanics never resolved which description is 'really' true; it just gave up treating them as mutually exclusive.
