A creaky voice quality was shown to make speakers sound less hireable
In a 2014 study, researchers recorded identical sentences spoken with and without vocal fry, the low creaky voice common among young American women, then played them to listeners. Voices with vocal fry were rated as less competent, less trustworthy, and less hireable, with the penalty falling hardest on women. A purely phonetic voice quality, it turns out, carries measurable social and economic consequences.
