When the Dutch East India Company (VOC) formed in 1602, it raised capital by selling tradable shares to the public, the first company in history to do so. To let investors buy and sell those shares, Amsterdam set up a dedicated exchange, creating the mechanics of the modern stock market centuries before Wall Street existed.
