Babies don't recognize themselves in a mirror until about 18 months old

Researchers secretly dab a dot of rouge on a toddler's nose, then watch what happens when the child sees their reflection. Touching their own nose shows they've recognized themselves — but almost no child under 18 months does it. The skill emerges gradually between 18 and 24 months, one of psychology's clearest markers of early self-awareness.
