A 120-mile trench let ships skip sailing all the way around Africa
Completed in 1869 after a decade of construction, the Suez Canal cuts through Egypt's Isthmus of Suez to link the Mediterranean and Red Seas. Because both seas sit at roughly the same level, the canal needed no locks — a rarity for a waterway its length — and it slashed the sailing distance between Europe and Asia by thousands of miles.
