Geography

Europe and Africa are separated by just 14 kilometres of water

At its narrowest, the Strait of Gibraltar is only about 14 km (9 miles) wide, close enough that each continent is visible from the other on a clear day. It's the sole opening connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean, controlling the exchange of an entire sea's water.
