The loudest sound any animal makes isn't a roar — it's a click in total darkness

Sperm whales hunt in the lightless deep ocean using clicks produced by the largest sound-generating organ of any animal, a nasal complex that can weigh several tonnes. Measured at up to 230 decibels underwater, these clicks are the loudest sounds known to be made by a living creature, loud enough that researchers suspect a close blast could stun prey outright.
