Remove one grain at a time from a heap — when exactly does it stop being a heap?

A heap of a million grains of sand is still a heap after you take away one grain. Do that again and again, one grain at a time, and by the same reasoning it should always still be a heap, yet eventually only one grain is left, and that's clearly not a heap. Where, exactly, did it stop being one?

There is no single grain where 'heap' flips to 'not heap', the puzzle shows that everyday words like 'heap' have genuinely vague boundaries that ordinary step-by-step logic wasn't built to handle, a problem still studied today as the philosophy of vagueness. Known as the Sorites Paradox, it's credited to the ancient Greek logician Eubulides of Miletus (4th century BCE) and survives through later writers such as Diogenes Laertius.
