A tiny garrison held a church for 337 days, unaware the war they were fighting had ended
Besieged by Filipino revolutionary forces in the small town of Baler in 1898, a Spanish garrison barricaded themselves inside the local church and held out for nearly a year, refusing every call to surrender. They only agreed to leave after being shown recent newspapers proving Spain had already lost the Philippines and signed a peace treaty. Their defiance earned them a hero's welcome back in Spain.
