Some pine cones are sealed shut and only open when a wildfire burns past
Lodgepole and jack pine produce cones coated in a tough resin that stays sealed for years, waiting for the heat of a forest fire to melt it open and release the seeds. This trait, called serotiny, means the tree's reproduction is timed to disaster rather than delayed by it, letting seedlings sprout in freshly cleared, sunlit, competitor-free ground. Entire forests can regenerate almost entirely from a single fire season.
