Russell found one question that broke the foundations of mathematics

In 1901 Bertrand Russell asked whether the set of all sets that do not contain themselves contains itself. Either answer makes the statement false — a genuine contradiction inside what mathematicians had assumed was solid ground, naive set theory. The discovery forced Russell and others to rebuild set theory's axioms from scratch, work that eventually produced the Zermelo-Fraenkel system still used today.
