A male praying mantis can keep mating even after losing his head
When a female praying mantis bites off her mate's head mid-sex, his body doesn't stop — it keeps making copulatory movements, sometimes more vigorously than before. The nerve center that normally holds those movements in check sits in the head, so removing it releases the behavior instead of ending it. Sexual cannibalism is real, but field studies of wild mantises found it in only about a third of matings, far less than lab observations implied.
