Prisoners who've only ever seen shadows mistake the shadows for the whole of reality

Plato describes people chained in a cave since birth, facing a wall where they see only shadows cast by objects passing behind them, shadows they take to be the entirety of reality. One prisoner is dragged out into the sunlight, and the story follows what it costs him to understand the difference between shadow and substance, and what happens when he goes back to tell the others.
