A near-miss magic square became math's favorite badge for a noble failure
A magic square built entirely from distinct square numbers — nine squares where every row, column and diagonal sums to the same total — has never been found, and may be impossible. In 2016, comedian-mathematician Matt Parker built his best attempt for a Numberphile video: eight of the nine lines summed correctly.

Still not a true magic square — one diagonal was off, and three of the nine numbers repeated instead of being distinct. It was close enough that 'Parker Square' became internet shorthand for a good-faith attempt that falls just short. Mathematician Tony Várilly-Alvarado later used algebraic geometry to argue a genuine 3×3 magic square of distinct squares is almost certainly impossible, though it remains formally unproven.
