The opah is the only fish known to be fully warm-blooded
Most fish run cold, matching the ocean around them. In 2015, NOAA biologist Nicholas Wegner found the opah constantly flaps its pectoral fins to generate heat, then uses a specialized gill design to stop that warmth escaping into the surrounding cold water. It's the only known fish that heats its entire body, including its heart and brain.
