A playwright rewrote the Declaration of the Rights of Man, article by article, for women
In 1791, two years into the French Revolution, Olympe de Gouges published the Declaration of the Rights of Woman and the Female Citizen, mirroring the Revolution's own founding document point for point to demand equal legal and political rights for women. She was guillotined in 1793, officially for her political pamphlets, and the government she addressed her declaration to largely ignored it.
