The 'mare' in nightmare was never a horse
Old English mare named a demon that sat on a sleeper's chest and smothered them with bad dreams, a folklore figure shared across Germanic and Slavic traditions. It traces to a Proto-Germanic word for 'goblin,' completely unrelated to the word for a female horse. The two mares are different words that just happen to sound alike.
