A text-message service in Kenya became the world's biggest mobile bank

Launched by Safaricom in 2007, M-Pesa let anyone with a basic phone send, receive, and store money by text, no bank account required. Within a decade most of Kenya's adults used it, and a landmark study found it lifted roughly 2% of Kenyan households out of extreme poverty, mainly by helping women start small businesses.
