How can you search for something if you don't already know what you're looking for?
In Plato's dialogue Meno, Socrates is challenged with a puzzle: if you don't know what virtue is, you can't recognize it even if you find it — and if you already know it, there's nothing left to search for. Plato's answer was that learning is really just recollecting knowledge the soul already had.
