Henry VIII watched his flagship sink, then it sat underwater for 437 years
The Mary Rose capsized in 1545 during a battle with the French fleet, in full view of Henry VIII watching from shore, drowning most of her 400-plus crew. Rediscovered in 1971, she was raised nearly intact in 1982 in a live televised broadcast watched by millions, along with over 19,000 Tudor-era artefacts — the largest single trove of everyday 16th-century English life ever recovered.
