Between 1811 and 1816, English textile workers calling themselves Luddites smashed mechanized looms that let factory owners replace skilled weavers with cheaper, unskilled labor. It wasn't blind technophobia: Parliament had just rejected a bill protecting their wages, and machine-breaking was the leverage that remained.
